Midwest hospitals see frostbite cases spike amid freezing temps

Hospitals in the Midwest are seeing a jump in frostbite cases and cold-related injuries as temperatures dip below freezing.

Dayton, Ohio-based Kettering Health Network reported 10 cases of frostbite at its campuses in the area, including Kettering Medical Center, Grandview Hospital, Soin Medical Center and Sycamore Medical Center, according to the Springfield News-Sun. The injuries were reported from 6 p.m. Jan. 29 through 11 a.m. Jan. 30.

Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton reported two frostbite cases at its campus, a spokesperson said.

UW Health in Madison, Wis., has reported eight cold-related injuries during the cold snap, CBS-affiliate TV station WISC reports.

UW Health officials said they have treated seven cases of frostbite since midnight Jan. 30. The hospital also treated one person with an injury caused by attempting to freeze boiling water.

In Minnesota, where wind chill values are expected to hit 43 below, Regions Hospital in St. Paul treated 28 people with frostbite, according to the Pioneer Press.

Hennepin Healthcare's burn clinic in Minneapolis has admitted 11 frostbite patients and is treating at least eight as outpatients, a hospital spokesperson said.
