An 82-year-old man shot and killed himself Aug. 21 in the emergency room at Wheeling (W.Va.) Hospital, according to The Intelligencer.
The man had a "small handgun" with him when he was transported to the hospital by ambulance, a hospital spokesperson told The Intelligencer. No other patients or staff were injured, according to the report.
Hospitals across the U.S. have ramped up security in recent years. Many hospitals have 24/7 security with armed or unarmed guards and metal detectors. The man who shot and killed himself at the West Virginia hospital did not walk through security since he was transported to the hospital by ambulance, according to WTOV9.
