Epic was the No. 1 EMR vendor when ranked by providers' satisfaction with patient portals, according to a KLAS Research report.
For the report, the health IT research firm sought to assess providers' attitudes toward popular patient engagement tools. However, KLAS Research found the patient engagement space is expansive: the firm asked providers to name health IT vendors they are currently using or considering for patient engagement functions, and 74 organizations mentioned a total of 109 unique vendor names.
One of the primary patient engagement technologies in use today is the patient portal. Through its research, KLAS Research found that although patient portals — which tend to be developed by EMR vendors — are omnipresent, the way providers discuss their usability and functionality varies widely.
Here are seven popular EMR vendors, ranked by provider satisfaction with their patient portals. The vendors were scored on a scale of zero to 100.
1. Epic (based on 37 customers): 92
2. Athenahealth (based on 30 customers): 84.8
3. Cerner (based on 17 customers): 77.2
4. Greenway Health (based on 31 customers): 76.4
5. eClinicalWorks (based on 17 customers): 71.4
6. Allscripts (based on 28 customers): 64.3
7. NextGen Healthcare (based on 15 customers): 63.3
KLAS Research noted that Epic is the most "deeply used" EMR vendor for patient engagement, with 92 percent of customers indicating the vendor plays a significant, if not major, role in their patient engagement efforts. Athenahealth customers regularly said the platform provided high usability and usefulness for patients.
