Michigan hospital launches book exchange initiative for patients

McLaren Northern Michigan in Petoskey set up public bookcases in its waiting rooms and cafeteria this month to improve patients' and visitors' hospital experience.

The hospital installed five Little Free Libraries in January, which each hold 20-30 books. Most books are donated by local community members. The libraries follow a "take a book, leave a book" philosophy, giving patients free access to reading materials during an appointment or hospital stay.

Patients have responded very positively to the libraries, and McLaren is accepting donations to help keep the shelves full, reports CBS affiliate 9&10 News.

McLaren installed the Little Free Libraries through a grant from the Burns Foundation.
