Top revenue-generators at hospitals — Orthopedic surgeons are No. 4

Orthopedic surgeons are the fourth biggest revenue-generators for their affiliated hospitals, according to Merritt Hawkins' "2019 Physician Inpatient/Outpatient Revenue Survey."

Orthopedic surgeons bring in more than six times their average annual starting salary, which is $533,000.

1. Cardiovascular surgery: $3.7 million
2. Cardiology (invasive): $3.5 million
3. Neurosurgery: $3.4 million
4. Orthopedic surgery: $3.3 million
5. Gastroenterology: $3 million
6. Hematology/oncology: $2.9 million
7. General surgery: $2.7 million
8. Internal medicine: $2.7 million
9. Pulmonology: $2.4 million
10. Cardiology (non-invasive): $2.3 million
