Meriden, Conn.-based MidState Medical Center has seen a rapid increase in surgical volume and operating revenues as it ramps up recruitment efforts, according to Hartford Business Journal.
In fiscal year 2018, the 156-bed hospital's operating room use increased by 374 cases — up 19.7 percent — and operating revenue jumped 27 percent to $271 million. The growth was largely driven by orthopedic care; MidState opened an orthopedic center in 2017.
The growth is straining MidState's OR capacity, which is expected to hit 84 percent by the end of this year, surpassing the optimal capacity of 75 percent. The hospital plans to develop three ORs, in addition to its 11 existing ones, for $26.2 million.
MidState Medical Center has hired 64 surgeons since 2017. It now employs 99 surgeons.
