ECRI Institute Provides Tips on Avoiding Surgical Fires

Surgical fires are the seventh most hazardous healthcare technology for 2012, according to an ECRI Institute report.

The report, "2012 Top 10 Health Technology Hazards," discusses the dangers of surgical fires and recommends how to prevent them.

ECRI Institute estimates approximately 600 surgical fires occur in the United States each year, yet almost all surgical fires can be avoided. Surgical fire prevention requires each member of the surgical team understand the role of oxidizers, ignition sources and fuels in the operating room. In addition, ECRI Institute recommends establishing a surgical fire prevention and management program that includes training and drills.

The report also suggested implementing clinical recommendations on oxygen delivery from the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation and ECRI Institute and having the surgical team do a timeout before the case begins to assess fire risks.
