Denver Health Wins International Award for Efficiency

Denver (Colo.) Health has been awarded the Shingo Prize for Operational Excellence, an international award that recognizes organizations excelling in operational efficiency, according to a Denver Post news report.

Denver Health uses the LEAN method, an efficiency model first established in the automotive industry. Health system officials say the LEAN method has helped it achieve $88 million in savings and protect the jobs of 5,500 health system employees, according to the news report.

One change the health system implemented was how antibiotics were administrated before surgery in operating rooms. Not only did the small operational change save time and money, but the change also helped reduce the number of surgical infections.
