Walmart unveiled a pharmacy initiative Jan. 17 to supply customers with a product to facilitate the safe disposal of excess opioids.
Here are three things to know.
1. Beginning Wednesday, patients filling opioid prescriptions at one of the Walmart's 4,700 pharmacies nationwide will receive DiposeRx, an FDA-approved powder packet.
2. To use DiposeRx, patients dump the powder into a pill bottle containing excess medications and add warm water. Once introduced to medication, the powder solidifies drugs in a biodegradable gel, which can then be safely thrown in the trash.
"The health and safety of our patients is a critical priority; that's why we're taking an active role in fighting our nation's opioid issue — an issue that has affected so many families and communities across America," said Marybeth Hays, executive vice president of consumables and health and wellness at the retail giant. "Walmart is incredibly proud to fund this initiative that provides our patients with an opioid disposal solution they can access nationwide, at no cost."
3. DisposeRx is also available to patients at Sam's Club pharmacies.
