Charlotte, N.C.-based Premier is creating a national opioid safety pilot program to improve post-operative pain management.
Here are five things to know.
- Premier is launching the program through its Hospital Improvement Innovation Network, a part of CMS' Partnership for Patients program. The American Society of Anesthesiologists is also partnering with Premier on the initiative.
- The program will challenge physicians at 30 hospitals nationwide to redesign treatment best practices with new pain management strategies for adults undergoing elective hip and knee replacements, and colectomy surgical procedures.
- Possible strategies for redesign best practices include engaging with patients and families on pain management expectations, and educating patients on safe opioid use and storage.
- Premier will offer various educational resources to clinicians and provide data collection and analytics services to track outcomes during the pilot program.
- The pilot will start in September 2017 and run through March 2018.
