Instagram deploys 'get support' feature for users searching opioids

Instagram is launching a new pop-up feature to help users who search drug-related hashtags find support resources, The Hill reports.

When users search for hashtags like #opioid or #uppers, they will be shown a screen that includes a link to a page containing information about resources to address substance abuse. From there, users can either select an option indicating they  are struggling with opioid or substance misuse, or that they know someone who may have a problem with opioid or substance misuse.

When a user clicks on either of the two options, they are prompted to call, or encourage their friend to call, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Helpline for free information and treatment referrals, among several other resources. Discussions with users who call the helpline are confidential.

Karina Newton, the social media platform's head of public policy, called the feature an "important step" in making Instagram the "kindest, safest social network," according to The Hill.

"The opioid epidemic is an issue that affects millions of people, and we want to use our platform to offer resources to those who need it — in the places where they are seeking help," she said.

While Instagram  has blocked some hashtags people have used to try and  sell drugs, the #opioid hashtag is a popular way for users to find and support others struggling with substance abuse.

Instagram debuted the "get support" feature debuted in the U.S. on Sept. 12, and plans to eventually roll out the feature globally.
