Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital is planning to build the Tampa Bay region's first freestanding proton therapy center, the hospital said Oct. 25.
Tampa General will partner with the Fort Myers, Fla.-based Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute; Radnor, Pa.-based Proton Therapy Partners; and Tampa-based Florida Urology Partners on the project.
Tampa General said they expect to break ground on the facility in the second quarter of 2022.
At present, Tampa Bay is the only major healthcare market in Florida without a proton therapy center, which forces patients to travel long distances for treatment.
