Northwell opens cancer hospital and cancer center

A gift from Roy Zuckerberg, a longtime trustee of New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health, led to the creation of the R.J. Zuckerberg Cancer Hospital and the R.J. Zuckerberg Cancer Center, Long Island Business News reported Oct. 21.

The cancer hospital, located at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, includes 164 beds and robotic cancer surgery operating rooms. Plans are also being made for a new women's cancer center, a center for genomic medicine and new technology to treat liver cancer.

The cancer center includes 64 infusion bays and will provide chemotherapy, immunotherapy and hormone therapy, radiation medicine, surgical and neurological consults, clinical trials, pharmacy and support programs for patients and their families.

The gift — the amount of which was not disclosed — will also be used for an endowed chair in cancer research at the health system.

"We are extraordinarily grateful to Roy for his visionary gift in helping to create a cancer campus, one that unifies LIJ's superb surgical cancer care with our cutting-edge outpatient oncology programs," Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell Health, said in a statement shared with the publication. "This is the first-of-its kind cancer campus on Long Island and in Queens, which will help us further integrate services and deliver the highest level and best possible cancer care to patients in the region."
