New York hospital, Roswell Park partner to open cancer center

Schenectady, N.Y.-based Ellis Medicine, a 438-bed community and teaching healthcare system, and Buffalo, N.Y.-based Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center opened a new medical oncology center Sept. 21.

The center, at the health system's flagship Ellis Hospital campus, offers medical oncology, chemotherapy and infusion services, among others.

The collaboration aims to expand access to advanced cancer care and clinical trials for patients in the state's Capital Region.

"This collaboration … will give residents of this region the best of both worlds: care plans and treatments overseen by one of the best cancer centers in the country, but available close to home in a community hospital setting," said Paul Milton, president and CEO of Ellis.

Tallat Mahmood, MD, is the medical director of the new center. She was the medical director of Memorial Healthcare Cancer Center in Owosso, Mich., before joining Roswell Park.

"In time, we want to not only expand services for the community, but also build a research infrastructure here and tap into the experience and the resources at Roswell Park to do that," Dr. Mahmood said

The oncology center is a member site of the Roswell Park Care Network, an expansive affiliation that involves community cancer, supportive and specialized care services across upstate New York.
