Miami cancer center unveils Engineering Cancer Cures program: 3 notes

The University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the university's college of engineering have launched Engineering Cancer Cures — an initiative focused on leveraging novel technologies to improve detection and advance cancer treatments.

Three details:

1. The collaborative initiative was created by Stephen Nimer, MD, director of Sylvester, and Pratim Biswas, PhD, dean of engineering at the University of Miami College of Engineering. It will be co-led by Shanta Dhar, PhD, assistant director for technology and innovation at Sylvester, and Ashutosh Agarwal, PhD, associate professor of biomedical engineering.

2. Engineering Cancer Cures is made up of three collaborative working groups: intelligent materials and targeting; cancer tissue engineering; and artificial intelligence/machine learning/deep learning-based imaging and analytics.

3. Among the initiative's first research projects are targeted tumor therapies, therapeutic cell engineering and AI in cancer imaging.

"Through this collaborative partnership, we will be able to integrate cancer biology, clinical outcomes, and new pathways discovered with engineered therapeutics and diagnostics to advance cancer cures," Dr. Dhar said in an April 4 news release.
