Longtime Temple leader, pioneering medical oncologist dies at 83

Richard Creech, MD, a pioneering medical oncologist, researcher and longtime leader, died July 1 of cancer at 83, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported July 19.

Dr. Creech was known for his "empathetic clinical care, groundbreaking research and innovative administrative skills," according to the report. He began his career at Philadelphia-based Fox Chase Cancer Center in 1972, where he served cancer patients and taught as an adjunct associate professor. From 1972 to 1979, he was Philadelphia General Hospital's chief of medical oncology. Then in 1984, he acted as interim division chief of medical oncology at Temple Hospital, then as chair of the department of medicine at Temple University Hospital's Jeanes campus from 1992 to 2014.

Dr. Creech developed a continuing medical education program for staff physicians, instituted a rotating staff schedule including students and residents, and was a lifelong educator, the report said.

He is survived by his wife, daughters, granddaughters and other relatives.
