Manhattan, N.Y.-based Lenox Hill Hospital opened a brain and spine metastasis program for patients suffering from metastatic cancer of the central nervous system, it said in a press release shared with Becker's.
Led by neurosurgeon Randy D'Amico, MD, the program uses a team-based collaborative approach to patient care. Specialists meet weekly to create customized treatment plans.
The program uses external radiation and brachytherapy, a type of internal radiation that uses small radioactive seeds to deliver radiation directly to tumors, to treat cancer.
"We are working to move the dialogue about brain and spine metastases away from the notion that it’s inevitably terminal and toward the new reality that modern therapies can offer hope to those suffering from this devastating disease," Dr. D'Amico, director of the new program and assistant professor of neurosurgery at the hospital, said in the release.
