Johns Hopkins, Howard U to 'reignite' health equity alliance

Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center and Washington, D.C.-based Howard University Cancer Center are "reigniting" their established partnership to eliminate health disparities in the Washington, D.C., area.

The new Howard-Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Alliance in Cancer Research, Education and Equity partnership is being funded by a $13.5 million grant over five years through the National Cancer Institute's Partnerships to Advance Cancer Health Equity program, according to a Jan. 7 news release from Johns Hopkins Medicine.

The institutions worked together on a previous initiative from 1999 to 2013, which aimed to increase clinical trial enrollment of patients from underrepresented groups, the release said.

The new alliance will build research infrastructure, expand educational opportunities, improve diversity among the cancer research workforce and develop collaborative community outreach programs.
