Texas system unveils 2nd nurse apprenticeship program

Edinburg, Texas-based DHR Health is expanding its nurse apprenticeship program. NBC affiliate ValleyCentral.com reported July 10.

DHR Health is partnering with Rio Grande Valley College to enroll students into an on-the-job nurse apprenticeship program that allows students to work at the hospital while pursuing their associate's degree.

This is the second school partnership they have formed. In July 2023, they partnered with South Texas College in McAllen, Texas on the first nurse apprenticeship program in the state and one of the first in the nation.

The first nurse apprenticeship program was launched by Madison, Wisc.-based UW Health in April 2023. The system partnered with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development and Madison College on the four-year program. Through the apprenticeship, students will complete two years of prerequisite coursework and two years of core nursing courses overseen by Madison College's faculty to receive their associate's degree.
