Johns Hopkins School of Nursing is unveiling a new institute Nov. 1 aimed at shifting the perception of nurses from a "necessary cost" to a "valued asset," the Baltimore-based university said.
The nursing school's Institute for Policy Solutions, located in Washington, D.C., has two goals. First, it will make a policy pathway for Johns Hopkins' nursing interventions, including prevention and care, diversity initiatives, new payment models and virtual nursing care.
Its second purpose is to centralize policy standards and media communications to one hub.
"The Institute will serve as a resource center where policymakers and news outlets can routinely seek nurses' input," the institute's website says. "The trust the public maintains in nurses — at a time of diminishing trust in other experts in scientific and health [fields] — will be an asset."
The institute's policies will focus on eliminating racist structures laid in the foundation of healthcare, according to a news release shared with The Baltimore Banner.
It will also work to improve people's ability to be healthy, including access to housing, education and the workforce, the release said.
