4 nurses making headlines on and off the job

Here are four nurses who have made headlines for their leadership efforts on and off the job since January 1:

Taking notice that there are no practicing physicians in Gates County, N.C., Mary Berry, RN, started doing house calls offering primary health care services to residents, according to a Jan. 22 report from CBS affiliate WNCT. She is a nurse practitioner with nearly 20 years of experience.

After 40 years of service, Barbara Young, a nurse at Pen Bay Medical Center, part of Portland-based MaineHealth, retired Jan. 6, the Courier-Gazette reported.

The American Nurses Association welcomed Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, PhD, RN, as its new president Jan. 1.

Kassondra Josey, RN, a nurse at Atrium Health Lincoln in North Carolina, was on a flight home from a vacation when an unresponsive passenger needed immediate medical help. She helped a physician who was also on board stabilize the passenger until the flight made an emergency landing, according to a news release from the health system.
