Scott Becker on the Rise of High Deductible Plans on "Money For Lunch"

Earlier today, Scott Becker, JD, CPA, publisher of Becker's Hospital Review and chairman of the healthcare department at McGuireWoods, appeared on the talk radio show "Money For Lunch."

Host Bert Martinez asked Mr. Becker about the biggest trends in the healthcare industry and the impact of healthcare policy for the "average joe."

According to Mr. Becker, one of the biggest impacts of healthcare reform on American's everyday lives has been the rise of high-deductible health plans being used by employers to contain healthcare costs. However, he calls the growth of HDHPs as a result of healthcare reform "ironic," because a Democratic-led initiative has given rise to a Republican-supported idea:

"You have something coming out of the Democratic administration and the Affordable Care Act that has been the longest standing plank of Republican healthcare, sort of consumer-driven healthcare which is embodied in these high deductible plans."

As a result of the growth of HDHPs, "consumers will be much more cost conscious about their own healthcare delivery," Mr. Becker said.
