A cardiologist at Houston Methodist Hospital, who once treated President George H.W. Bush, was fatally shot by a man on a bicycle near the flagship campus, according to a Click2Houston news report.
The gunman fired multiple shots, hitting Mark Hausknecht, MD, at least once. Dr. Hausknecht was taken to Houston-based Ben Taub Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
"The suspect was on a bicycle as well, rode past the doctor, turned and fired two shots. The doctor went down immediately," Houston Police Department's executive assistant Troy Finner said.
The hospital said Dr. Hausknecht was riding his bicycle to work when he was shot by another man riding a bicycle, according to the report.
"I'm very sorry to inform you that Dr. Mark Hausknecht, a cardiologist who was an important member of the Houston Methodist staff and the DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center, was tragically shot and killed this morning while riding his bicycle to work. Mark was a leader in the Houston Cardiovascular Associates and specialized in cardiovascular disease. We wish Mark’s family and friends peace and prayers as they cope with their loss," a hospital statement reads.
It is not clear if Dr. Hausknecht was targeted or if the shooting was random.
The shooting was reported about 8:50 a.m. July 20. Police are searching for the gunman. The investigation is ongoing.
