One in four admissions for pediatric chronic dialysis results in a readmission within 30 days of discharge, according to a study in Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
Researchers analyzed data from the Pediatric Hospital Information System on chronic dialysis patients between the ages of 3 months and 17 years from January 2006 to November 2010.
They found 25 percent of hospital admissions for these patients resulted in a readmission within 30 days.
Additionally, patients under 2 years old had higher odds of readmission (0.8 to 0.5). Patients receiving dialysis also had higher odds of readmission (1.4 to 1.0), as did admissions lasting more than 14 days (2.0 to 1.1).
Study authors suggest further research is necessary to reduce the high readmission rates for pediatric chronic dialysis patients.
