Within hours of being sworn in as the new Republican governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker authorized Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen to join a federal lawsuit in Florida challenging the healthcare reform law's mandate for individuals to buy health insurance, according to a report by the Hill.
Last March, former Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle denied a request by Mr. Van Hollen to join the Florida lawsuit. The judge in the case, a Reagan appointee, is expected to issue his decision this month.
So far, two federal judges appointed by President Clinton have upheld the law's individual mandate and one judge in Virginia, appointed by President George W. Bush, struck it down. The Obama administration will challenge the Virginia decision in the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals. The 6th Circuit is considering an appeal of one of the decisions to uphold the individual mandate.
