WellStar Health System, based in Marietta, Ga., has submitted a challenge to Northside Hospital-Cherokee's plan to relocate to a new site, according to a local Patch report.
Northside Hospital's relocation proposal was drafted in response to estimates that Cherokee County's elderly population will triple by 2030. The new $250 million hospital will be an 84-bed facility with a women's center, a multi-specialty medical office building and cancer center, according to the report.
WellStar argued Northside's new campus is more than three miles away and would provide new healthcare services. Under a controversial law passed in 2008, hospitals are no longer required to undergo a certificate of need review if the provider plans to move less than three miles away and does not expand its range of healthcare services.
Northside officials have refuted WellStar's claims.
