Washington State Exchange Miscalculates PPACA Subsidies

The Washington state health insurance exchange miscalculated tax credit amounts for about 8,000 people, telling them they can receive bigger subsidy amounts than they actually qualify for, according to a Kaiser Health News report.

Next week, the Washington Health Benefit Exchange plans to send letters to those affected informing them of the error in calculating tax credits, which are available to qualified enrollees to help pay for coverage under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to the report.

For a few weeks after the exchange opened, the state's exchange website, Washington Healthplanfinder, sent applicants' monthly incomes instead of their annual incomes to the federal data hub, leading to the calculation of erroneously high tax credit amounts, according to the report.

The Washington exchange is the only state-run marketplace to report making this particular type of error to CMS so far, according to the report.
