For hospitals and other healthcare organizations, becoming more sustainable can drive results around economic prosperity, environmental stewardship and social responsibility, according to a whitepaper by Johnson Controls.

The report, "Understanding and Linking Sustainability for Healthcare," outlines a framework for healthcare organizations to begin talking about including sustainability into their strategy and decision-making criteria. It simplifies the process down to four steps:

1. Set strategy and policy
2. Build the analytical platform to measure sustainability programs
3. Develop programs to accomplish goals
4. Develop communication programs to get stakeholders engaged
