Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) rejected a request yesterday to pass a bill that would delay the individual health insurance mandate under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) asked for unanimous consent to pass the Fairness for American Families Act, which would delay the mandate from going into effect until 2015. The individual mandate requires individuals to buy health insurance or pay a penalty.
The House passed the bill earlier this month, along with another piece of legislation to delay the employer health insurance mandate. When lawmakers passed the bills, the Obama administration had already delayed the employer mandate by one year.
