Report: GPOs are Ethical, Promote Innovation

The Healthcare Group Purchasing Industry Initiative, a non-profit, voluntary organization, has released its seventh annual "Report to the Public," which found that group purchasing organizations have consistently maintained high ethical standards and have promoted new innovative technologies for healthcare.

For the last seven years HGPII members have submitted to an annual, independent review of individual company business practices. In 2012, the HGPII co-coordinators began to oversee the review. The report details the co-coordinators' assessment of the group purchasing industry.

Key findings of the report are:

•    All member organizations had conformed to consistently high standards in their bidding and awards process, and had identified transparency in these contracts as an organizational priority.
•    Each of the member organizations that directly contract for medical technology products had developed and implemented policies that promoted the availability of new innovative technologies for healthcare.
•    All member organizations had offered an active and accessible grievance policy for vendors.
•    All members had commonly restrained the size of vendor fees.
•    Every member organization had provided employees with a written ethics policy and orientation on hiring, with periodic refresher sessions for existing employees.
•    Each member had adequately participated in the HGPII Annual Best Practices Forum, with representation by both the management and key employees.
