PPACA Exchanges Still Open for Enrollment in Some States

The 2014 enrollment period for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act exchanges isn't over yet in at least eight states and the District of Columbia, according to a report from The Hill.

That means PPACA enrollment likely hasn't reached its peak yet. Last week, President Barack Obama announced the exchanges had reached 8 million enrollees as of April 15. The exchanges have far exceeded expectations: The most recent Congressional Budget Office benchmark (released in February) was 6 million.

Although the 2014 open enrollment period officially ended on the last day of March, the Obama administration extended the deadline to April 15 for people who started signing up for coverage before the deadline but were unable to complete the process.

However, some state-based exchanges have extended their enrollment periods even further to accommodate people who couldn't sign up because of technical glitches, which have plagued some state exchange sites as well as HealthCare.gov.  Nevada, for instance, has given its residents until May 30 to sign up for health insurance. D.C.'s and Oregon's open enrollment periods run through April 30, according to The Hill.

Opponents of the PPACA have criticized the extended sign-up periods, saying they're a ploy to inflate enrollment numbers during the exchanges' first year, according to the report.
