A new bill introduced in the Senate would create Medicare and Medicaid benefit for providers who provide a voluntary, structured discussion about treatment options and preferences for seriously ill patients.
The goal of the Care Planning Act of 2013, introduced by Sens. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.) and Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), is to produce written plans that reflect patients' informed choices about their care options.
The bill would also fund a public information campaign about advanced care planning options, and would create a Senior Navigation Advisory Board, made up of healthcare professionals, faith leaders and patient advocates, that would advise and monitor HHS as the law takes effect.
