Most Practices Unhappy With Medicare's Physician Quality Reporting Initiative

Most practices are frustrated with reporting requirements for Medicare's Physician Quality Reporting Initiative and unhappy with its guidances to improve outcomes, according to a release by the Medical Group Management Association.

Practices participating in PQRI receive a 2 percent bonus on their Medicare reimbursements, but an MGMA survey in 2008, the latest year, revealed that practices have a number of difficulties with the program:

  • 52 percent did not successfully access their 2008 PQRI feedback report, down from 49 percent in MGMA's 2007 PQRI survey.
  • Practices that did access the reports said it took almost nine hours, representing total time spent by all practice staff and physicians to download the data, an increase from five hours in 2007.
  • 60 percent of practices accessing feedback reports were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with the reports' presentation of the information.
  • 67 percent were dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with the report’s guidances to improve patient care outcomes.

In addition, MGMA reported practices experienced an 18-month delay between inputting PQRI data and receiving feedback reports.
