Starting this summer, Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston will expand and renovate its Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center campus.
The project, approved last month by the system's board of directors, is expected to cost $650 million and will be completed in 2018. Memorial Hermann will construct a new patient care building as well as a new parking structure. As part of the expansion, Memorial Hermann will add 1.34 million square feet, which will include 160 additional beds, 24 new operating rooms and 16 emergency room bays.
Dan Wolterman, president and CEO of Memorial Hermann, said the large-scale project was needed "to stay ahead of the fast-growing advances in medicine, keep pace with the extraordinary growth of our medical staff and meet the health needs of our community."
Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center was the first hospital to open in the Texas Medical Center, one of the largest medical complexes in the world with 54 healthcare institutions. Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center is also the flagship of the 12-hospital system.
