Maryland Internist Allegedly Bilked More Than $800K From Medicare, Medicaid

The Department of Health and Human Services has filed a civil complaint against La Plata, Md.-based internist Abdul Fadul, MD, accusing him of fraudulently collecting more than $814,000 from Medicare and Medicaid, according to a Washington Examiner report.

The complaint says Dr. Fadul billed the two programs thousands of times for procedures that were not performed between 2004 and 2005. The complaint alleges that Dr. Fadul set up billing systems at his clinic, Cardio Vascular Center in La Plata, Md., that automatically rendered bills for more tests than a physician performed.

His practice allegedly billed Medicare and Medicaid more than 10,000 times for two ultrasounds of extremities when only one was performed and more than 2,000 times for multiple abdominal ultrasounds. The suit asks the court to impose a penalty of $11,000 per false claim.

Dr. Fadul was the target of a federal investigation in 2009, when the FBI searched his offices after he was suspected of submitting false claims to payors using the names of Egyptian Embassy employees. No criminal charges were every brought against Dr. Fadul for that matter.
