Jackson Health System in Miami to Lay Off a "Significant" Number of Employees

Carlos Migoya, CEO of Jackson Health System in Miami, said he plans to lay off a "significant" amount of employees in about two weeks, according to a Miami Herald report.

Mr. Migoya did not specify how many people would be let go, describing it only as a "significant number," according to the report. Reduced patient volumes, due in part to shorter average lengths of stay and increased outpatient treatments, motivated the decision to decrease the system's workforce.

Jackson Health is also facing significant financial challenges. It posted losses of $18.8 million in the first three months of fiscal 2011-2012 and could lose $45 million from state cuts to Medicaid. In addition, while the health system had a $348,000 surplus in December, it projects it will run out of cash by August without major changes, according to the report.
