Illinois Owes at Least $32 million to Peoria Hospitals

The state of Illinois owes Peoria healthcare providers at least $32 million, mostly in late Medicaid reimbursements, according to the Peoria Journal Star.

The state is five months and $25.6 million behind in bills owed to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, owes Methodist Medical Center $5-$6 million, and Proctor Hospital about $1.6 million.

Often, these bills are several months old, according to the report.

The state's backlog of unpaid bills this November was the highest it has ever been—almost $4 billion. It could rise to $5 billion by March.

In an effort to tackle its rising debt, the state has entered into a $1.4 billion short-term borrowing arrangement this month.
