House to Vote on Repeal Before State of The Union Speech

Republicans taking control of the House plan to schedule a vote to repeal the healthcare reform law before President Obama delivers his State of the Union address in late January, according to a report by the Washington Post.

Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.), new chair of a House committee overseeing healthcare, said repeal would be a top priority for the new House, which starts on Wednesday.

Rep. Upton, who takes leadership of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said repeal efforts may even gain the two-thirds majority required to override a presidential veto, but if that doesn't happen, he plans "go after this bill piece by piece."

However, Republicans' repeal prospects are dimmer in the Senate, where Democrats and independents will have a 53-47 majority. Democrats said they plan to aggressively defend the reform law, after mostly running away from the issue in the November elections.
