House Passes Repeal of Reform Law, Hearings Are Next Step

The House passed a bill to repeal the healthcare reform law by a vote of 245 to 189, with unanimous GOP support plus the votes of three Democrats, according to a report by Politico.

Fewer House Democrats voted for repeal than Republicans had predicted. The Democrat-run Senate is not planning a vote on the bill and, in any case, the president is expected to veto it. But House Republicans promise to follow up the repeal vote with a great deal more actions.

Four House committees plan to hold hearings, require testimony from administration officials and look for ways cut funding for the law. They will scrutinize the cost of the law, the mandate for larger employers to provide coverage and the impact of the law on states.

The committees also plan to draft alternative healthcare reform proposals that include reducing malpractice lawsuits, preventing health insurers from denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions and baring use of taxpayer money for abortions.
