The hospital sector added 5,300 jobs in July, according to the latest statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
In June, the hospital sector added a total of 3,700 jobs. Since July 2011, hospitals have added more than 86,000 new jobs to the economy; they currently employ more than 4.8 million people nationwide.
Within the healthcare industry, employment in ambulatory healthcare services, which includes home healthcare and offices of physicians, rose by 8,900 jobs. Outpatient care centers added 4,100 jobs and physician offices added 2,700 new jobs. Meanwhile, nursing and residential care facilities lost 2,200 jobs in July.
Overall, the healthcare industry added more than 12,000 jobs in July.
Across industries, employment increased in professional and business services, manufacturing, food services, retail and healthcare, but declined slightly in construction.
