In February, Congress passed the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012 to extend several provisions to rural hospitals and beneficiaries, but many of those need to be extended again before the end of the year or else they will expire.
Congress has enacted several provisions over the years targeted at the specific challenges of rural healthcare, including the low-volume hospital payment adjustment, the Medicare-Dependent Hospital program and the Medicare-reimbursement boosting Section 508 reclassification program, according to the report.
