Pittsburgh, Pa.-based health insurer Highmark has named William Winkenwerder, Jr., MD, MBA, as its new CEO, replacing Kenneth Melani, MD, who was fired after being charged with assault and trespassing.
Dr. Winkenwerder served as the as assistant secretary of defense for health affairs in the U.S. Department of Defense from October 2001 through April 2007 and has held numerous executive positions in the healthcare industry.
He received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business.
