GOP Prepares Healthcare Plan if Court Overturns PPACA

While nothing is set in stone, Republican lawmakers are cobbling together healthcare reform plans should the Supreme Court Overturn the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to a Reuters report.

A Republican plan would likely take a step-by-step approach and introduce separate bills to address problems in the healthcare system. Leaders says stopgap legislation is a possibility should the Supreme Court overturn all of the PPACA. Republicans may have a plan in place as soon as Memorial Day.

"When the Supreme Court acts, we will be ready with plans that actually work to lower the cost of care and to help people keep the care they want," said Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), an orthopedic surgeon and member of the House Republican Policy Committee.

Meanwhile, the GOP's likely presidential candidate Mitt Romney has given a fragmented view of what a President Romney healthcare package might look like. Mr. Romney says he will repeal and replace President Obama's healthcare law with one that gives Americans tax breaks to buy health plans, if elected. Such a move could encourage many companies to drop employee health insurance coverage. Mr. Romney's plan would also overhaul Medicare and Medicaid.
