The federal government is discontinuing funding for Texas' Women's Health Program due to the state's exclusion of Planned Parenthood from the program, according to a Texas Tribune report.
President Barack Obama's administration says the exclusion of Planned Parenthood violates a federal law allowing Medicaid patients to choose their own providers, while Republican state officials say the federal government is inappropriately interfering in the state's decision, according to the report.
CMS will gradually phase out the program, with a possible extension of funds if women lose services under Texas' program within the next three months. If no women lose services in the three-month period, CMS will halt funds.
Gov. Rick Perry said he would continue the family planning program at an annual cost of more than $30 million.
