Cleveland Clinic to Require Unhealthy Employees to Pay Higher Premiums

Cleveland Clinic employees are now eligible for partial refunds of their health insurance premiums, which increased 21 percent this year, according to a Plain Dealer report.

Employees who enroll in the Clinic's "Healthy Choice" program will be eligible for refunds if they meet certain personal health goals established by a Healthy Choice physician. Goals may include weight loss and smoking cessation, among other outcomes. Healthy patients will receive the refunds if they enroll in the program and join a fitness center or program. Cleveland Clinic provides free membership to its fitness centers if employees work out 10 times or more each month, according to the report.

Employees who already participate in the Healthy Choice program face 4 or 9 percent increases, based on whether or not they met their goals, as opposed to the full 21 percent increase.
