Strengthening leadership and perioperative systems helped increase surgical volume at a 289-bed quaternary hospital by 19 percent in two years, according to a Surgical Directions case study.
Initially, the hospital was not meeting its budget due to operating room issues, including closed ORs from a lack of anesthesia coverage; a high rate of same-day cancellations; slow room turnovers; abuse of block time privileges; and dissatisfied surgeons.
To remedy these issues, Surgical Directions worked with physician and hospital leaders to strength anesthesia and OR nursing leadership. Surgical Directions also established a preoperative clinic and improved materials management, scheduling, preoperative evaluation and information systems.
As a result, the hospital's surgical volume increased 19 percent within 24 months, the anesthesia department was fully staffed and had improved financials, all ORs were open and staffed, same-day cancellations decreased and surgeon satisfaction increased.
