In a community battle to save Long Island College Hospital in New York City, a nearby food co-op has issued a letter calling for Gov. Andrew Cuomo to intervene in the safety-net hospital's closing, according to a report by the New York Times.
The 16,000-member Park Slope Food Co-op added the proposition to right the call-to-action letter to preserve LICH, part of the State University of New York and operated by Brooklyn's SUNY Downstate Medical Center on its latest meeting agenda, receiving the support of the approximately 300 members in attendance.
Co-op member and LICH emergency physician Saul Melman, MD, cosigned the letter, claiming the hospital serves a community need that will grow as the population of northwest Brooklyn grows.
LICH has been on the chopping block for the state since March, losing an estimated $1 million each week.
