Blue Cross Blue Shield, Caritas Christi Sign Contract for Global Payment System

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and Boston-based Caritas Christi Health Care have signed a five-year contract that would pay hospitals on a global payment system opposed to the current fee-for-service system, according to a report in the Boston Globe.

Under the contract, the six hospitals in Caritas Christi's system would be paid a fixed amount based on the estimated annual cost of a patients' care, and incentives to improve quality and affordability of healthcare are included, according to the report.

Around 1,100 physicians affiliated with Caritas Christi who serve nearly 60,000 BCBS patients in the Boston area are covered under the new contract.
