AHA Issues Comments on Administrative Simplification Rules

The American Hospital Association has commented on a rule that establishes unique identifiers for health plans and other entities, saying the rule would facilitate routing of electronic healthcare claims, according to an AHA News Now report.

Health plans covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act would be required to use a health plan ID in healthcare transactions. Also, pharmacists and providers exempt from HIPAA laws would be allowed to apply for a national provider ID to use in claims.

AHA recommends CMS require health plans to use the health plan ID on subscriber enrollment cards and provide guidance on when to use sub-health plan identifiers.

AHS has also asked CMS to extend the rule's effective date and compliance deadline.
