Wyoming Medical Center Nears Settlement With Whistleblower

Wyoming Medical Center in Casper has reached a settlement in principle with a whistleblower who claimed the hospital overbilled Medicare and Medicaid and fired her after she went to the authorities, according to a Casper Star-Tribune report.

Terms of the settlement, which has yet to be finalized, were not disclosed. Gale Bryden filed suit against WMC in 2007, and a judge unsealed the suit in October 2011. It claimed the 191-bed hospital altered patient records in order to receive increased reimbursement and fired Ms. Bryden in 2009 out of retaliation.

WMC maintained it fired Ms. Bryden for legitimate reasons and that billing discrepancies were errors.

Ms. Bryden's attorney filed a motion to postpone a pre-trial conference because of a time conflict and because Ms. Bryden and WMC had reached a settlement in principle. That document also said there "are additional matters that may require the court's attention which are being addressed at this time between [Ms. Bryden] and the U.S. government," but no further details were provided, according to the report.
